Sterile Processing Department (SPD) Tech

The Sterile Processing Department Technician is responsible for monitoring equipment, sterilization devices and telephone calls. Must be able to discern the difference in surgical instruments prior to assembly. Provide hospital and affiliate facilities with processed materials and equipment ensuring a quality product for patient care by executing established procedures for decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging and sterilization of medical / surgical equipment to standards.

Job Responsibilities/Duties

  • Accountable for the instrument assembly and preparation function which includes inspection and assembly of instrumentation sets used in the Operating Room as well as other departments in the hospital.
  • The decontamination function encompasses cleaning and disinfection of reusable instruments, supplies and equipment used in surgical patient care. This process is pivotal to breaking the disease transmission chain and this is essential to infection control and sterility assurance. Will performing the above consistent with established guidelines and protocols.
  • The Lead Sterilization Specialist is accountable for the most technically complex function in SPD. Sterilization and the maintenance of sterility, as well as the specific procedures and process followed.
  • Complete knowledge of instrumentation, and equipment used for sterilization, biologicals, protocols, as well as supplies is required. It is imperative that technicians apply knowledge of AAMI / AORN standards and the factors that affect the process of sterilization.
  • Perform Inventory / Storage / Distribution functions.


Minimum Education: High School graduate or equivalent. 

Minimum Experience: One to two (1-2) years healthcare or other related experience. Experience in operating sterilization equipment.

Req. Certification/Licensure: Registered Certified Central Service Tech through CBSPD or IAHCSMM. Must be certified from an accredited program for Sterile Processing Technician.
