Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Emergency Department

The EMT is responsible for assessment and basic management of medical, trauma and environmental emergencies under the supervision of the staff nurse and / or physician. Assists with patient care based on individual patient needs within the scope of practice under the direct supervision of the ER Nurses.  

Job Responsibilities/Duties

  • Provides basic care to the neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and older adult (geriatric) patients as directed and supervised by a Registered Nurse. Demonstrates proficiency in delivering care to assigned age specific patient population (e.g. infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, geriatrics). Provides RN with data that may be used in the development of the plan of care and patient goals.
  • Collects essential patient data and documents on appropriate forms within established time frame. Documents vital signs, weight, oral intake and output according to hospital / department policy.
  • Emergency Medical Technician is responsible for the assessment and basic management of medical, trauma and environmental emergencies under the supervision of the RN staff nurse and / or physician.
  • Willingly performs additional duties and responsibilities in different areas of the department on an as needed basis or as a determined by management.
  • Acts as preceptor for new employees.


Minimum Education: Minimum of a High School graduate or equivalent. Participates in related continuing education. Successful completion of a California Emergency Med Tech Course.

Minimum Experience: Minimum one (1) year experience as an Emergency Medical Technician in an acute care facility. 

Req. Certification/Licensure: Current California EMT Certification. Current American Heart Association (BLS) Certification, CPI NVCPI Certification.
